July: Ishvara Pranidhana – Surrender


Ishvara Pranidhana translates with two words, Ishvara to ‘Supreme Being’, ‘God’, ‘Brahman’, ‘Ultimate Reality’, or ‘True Self’ and Pranidhana means ‘fixing’. In many translations, Ishvara Pranidhana asks us to “surrender” to the Supreme Being or Higher Self. This doesn’t ask us to associate yoga with a religion, but suggests the underlying idea is that something bigger, more profound and pure exists within ourselves. This doesn’t have to be a figure or a person, but rather faith in something bigger than ourselves – our spirituality. This contemplative faith we seek out reminds us of the big picture which helps us take care of our daily actions and tasks with love.


Spirituality embraces the light and the dark and is many things in our heart. Your divine expression may be to read books, listen to music, to dance, to meditate, to pray, or to walk. Awareness is what brings us to fully express our authentic Self and to “let go” of the need to control all aspects of life.


Ishvara Pranidhana in practice:

Ishvara Pranidhana can be understood as surrender to the highest quality you can contain and want to embody. For many, this is love. Love is the feeling that connects us to others and our self. A beautiful way to practice Ishvara Pranidhana is to truly practice self-love and get more connected to our truest self as well as express love for others.
